Now let us see what you need and what steps you must take in order to make your own keychain. For example to make your own keychain you will need some basic tools and a small piece of scrap leather. Among these tools there are flat work surfaces, leather hole puncher, leather or rawhide mallets, razor knives, leathers, pencils utility knives, rivets, rivet tools, and metal rings for keys. In order to accomplish the task at hand, that is to make your own keychain, you need to follow certain steps.

The first and a very important step when you decide to make your own keychain, is to determine the desired dimensions and shape of the keychain. You should know that an average keychain fob is approximately 3 to 4 inches in length and 11 to 2 inches in width. Add 11 inches to the desired length to allow for the tab that will be looped around the key ring. The next thing to do to make your own keychain is to get a piece of leather large enough to accommodate the desired dimensions. Besides, you will also need a rivet for holding the looped tab in place. After you cut the leather into the right shape and dimension, do all the necessary dying, painting or tooling of the leather piece.

With a pencil mark the rivet holes on the back of the fob, along the tab. Make sure that both marks are centered along the tab. To make your own keychain perfectly well, use a rotary punch or drive punch and mallet to make holes in the leather at the marked rivet holes. The rivet diameter and the diameter of each punched hole should be equal. Then introduce the tab through the key ring and fold the tab back, wrong sides together, so that the rivet holes line up. Finally, insert the rivet from under the fob. Put the fob on a flat work surface and affix the rivet cap to the rivet with a mallet. After such a process do you still think it is difficult to make your own keychain? I don’t think so. Good luck!
